You don't take on a millennia-old secret society armed with tanks and gunships if you're just a normal person. Honestly I think it makes sense, when seen as the culmination of her evolution from scared grad student to badass adventurer. I've seen complaints about how Lara seems to be a psycho in this game, with Jonah having to pull her into line. The characterisation has been excellent thus far. We all know that it's really just an excuse to raid tombs and kill bad guys. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me either, but I just go with the flow. The storyline is admittedly messy, but it gets the job done. I like how your "really minor criticisms" take up more than half of your post. I think I will like this one the most out of the three games. Helpful the first couple of times, not helpful near the end of the game. I'd like to be able to turn off the dialog which tells me to rappel every time that's an option, or how to jump and grapple. Lots of awkward staring in random directions or at the camera, and impossible or awkward neck twists. I suspect it suffers from Mass Effect Andromeda syndrome, where they ran out of time to polish them all before release. The cut scenes animation quality is all over the place as well. Every single cut scene is just a facepalm over a facepalm. I don't quite understand how a game with so many people working on it, with such vast resources invested into it, couldn't even just have a regular ol' silly story. The first game had okay-bad writing, the second was worse (by a lot). Some of the tombs have some throwback stylistic inspiration from Tomb Raider 1 and 2. I like that there are more challenge tombs, and they've made them more diverse and enjoyable. I'm not complaining, it's enjoyable, but they are what they are. Unsurprisingly, aside from tombs, the side-quests are just fetch quests. The populated mini-hubs are interesting, but also sort of just filler with lots of walking back and forth. Also, when hanging by your rope, you can swing from side to side to build momentum before jumping off. You can rappel down from a rock face when there's a void beneath. (You actually drop off the branch which yanks your victim into the air, like a pulley you then grab them in mid-air and strangle them with the rope.) When sitting on a branch, you can shoot someone with a rope arrow and then pull them up, hanging them. So you're not just the Predator, you're Arnie as well. You can smear mud on yourself and hide in foliage-covered walls. Everything pretty much works the same as it did in Rise, which is fine by me - that was one of my gaming highlights of this year. Lara runs around in the jungle, going all Predator on hapless Trinity goons while agonizing about the end of the world. I preordered right at the beginning of the week, which meant I got to start playing 48 hours early. Doesn't look like there's a thread for the 3rd instalment of the reboot, so here's one.
